Burn My Hands on Open Road (1/?) →

notsomanic:

Summary: If they are a three-headed beast, Daryl thinks Andrea’s the part that’s got the humanity left inside. The part that laughs and chatters and still cares about how things used to be. How they might be in the future.

Pairing: Daryl/Andrea (eventually)

Genre: AU

Daryl goes looking for Sophia

It’s an interesting scene this.
Daryl’s being kept awake through Carol’s sobbing and Andrea’s need to prove herself by familiarizing herself with guns.
So instead of taking over and watch, he goes out searching for Sophia. Not a strange thing in itself, but it’s strange he allows Andrea to go with him.
He’s a loner, always has been. Tells Rick himself in a different episode that he’s better by himself.
So it’s strange that on this occasion, he lets Andrea come with him.

But then you see what happens when they go out together.

This first scene, Daryl shares a story with her.
She’s the first person he’s opened up to about his past that we’ve seen. And when he tells group members about his past, it’s not just carefree.
The only other tale we’ve had from his past is what he tells Carl after Lori’s death.
He relates things carefully. They are well thought out.
So I believe him telling Andrea this story isn’t just random, he’s trying to give her the hope she lost when Amy died.

He’s saying that he did it and he believes 100% that Sophia will be able to survive too. Probably because he believes he’s nothing special and there’s no good reason why he should survive and she shouldn’t.

And Andrea is the first person to see a lighter side from Daryl (besides the CDC, but alcohol was involved). He laughs and smiles with her. And for just a moment, he draws closer to her as they walk.

And later on, when they find the walker he questions her about her wanting to live or not.

If Daryl lets you go into the woods with him, you can be certain he’s got an agenda.

Still my favourite scene of the entire series. I really feel like there was the potential for an amazing friendship between these two (and possibly more, some time down the road). Norman and Laurie have awesome chemistry, and even though their characters were very different I feel like they would have been a very compatible team.

Grimacing, Daryl rose to his feet and tried not to acknowledge the punch of guilt that hit him square in the nuts every time he thought about her, even now, eight months later. He’d more or less made peace with what happened to his brother and Sophia, but leaving Andrea back at the farm never really stopped eating away at him. For the most part he could ignore it, slam it behind a door in his mind labeled ‘Andrea’ and let it rot somewhere in the dark while he tended to more immediate concerns. He had a lot of doors like that. There was one for Merle, one for Sophia, one marked ‘Dad’, ‘Mom’, ‘foster home’, ‘school’, ‘hospital’ – one for all the painful shit in his life he would have liked to forget but couldn’t.

But with Merle, he had at least done something. He marched straight into Atlanta to get him back, just like he marched into the woods day after day to find Sophia. With Andrea, he didn’t even try. None of them tried. Nobody had even made sure she was actually dead before taking off.

Daryl saw it all from a distance. He hadn’t been quick enough with his arrow, and now Andrea had fallen to the ground with the weight of the dead walker upon her. She hadn’t been aware of the walker lurking just behind her, and when it had attacked, it was too late.

He ran to her, pushing the walker from her, and lifting her head. He shook his head, tears already falling down his face. She couldn’t be bit. Not now. Not when they’d worked so damn hard to get back to the ones they loved and each other. “God damn it, sis. Talk to me!”

He wanted to shake her, but he didn’t want to cause her anymore pain. The bite was lethal, right through her jugular vein. He quickly worked to pull off his shirt and push it into her wound to slow the bleeding.

His hands shook as he lifted her head to see blood coming from the side of her mouth. He begged, “You ain’t leavin’ me now, lil sister. You hear me, ‘ndrea? God damn it! Don’t you close your eyes!” He shook her then as he felt the last of her strength leaving her body.

He could hear her desperately trying to form words. His own brain wouldn’t shut up enough so he pressed his ear right down to her lips and begged, “Say it ‘gain. C’mon, angel.”

Then he heard it. “I lo-love you, br-brother.” Then she slipped away, and he knelt there, holding her close as he screamed to whatever higher being was still out there. “God damn you! You take everything away! Everything that matters more than my own fuckin’ life! Goddamnyou!”

He didn’t care if every walker from coast to coast heard him. He’d lost the one person that helped him become whole. And she wasn’t even blood. She was more than blood. He held her until the others found them and took her from him.

He fought Rick and Shane with bloodied fists. It was her blood he was covered with. “You ain’t doin’ it for me. You ain’t! I gotta do it. I made a fuckin’ promise.” He held tight to the front of Shane’s shirt and pulled his face right down into his own. “Me. Not you,” he growled with tears running down his face.

And then Rick put the pistol in his hand. He walked to where her body lay, alone and getting cold. He knelt down beside her lifeless body, and whispered, “You ain’t becomin’ one them things.”

The shot rang out and then there was silence as Daryl stood up, thrust the gun into Rick’s hand, and grabbed his crossbow off the ground where it had fallen. He wasn’t about to watch them lay her in the ground.
